Northern Marmara Motorway
The construction of the Northern Marmara Motorway, which has a total length of 443 km and is equipped with 2x4 lanes, began in 2013 using the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. It has been opened to traffic except for the 45 km Nakkaş-Başakşehir section.
The project, which is among the most significant motorway investments in our country, aims to improve the quality and safety of transportation by separating the increasing urbanization and industrialization traffic in the east-west direction in the North Marmara Region from the intercity and international traffic passing through the region's main transportation arteries.
The motorway, providing uninterrupted, safe, and comfortable transit for national and international road transportation and freight vehicles, has facilitated transportation from Istanbul to the heavily industrial and industrial areas in the provinces of Kocaeli and Sakarya. It also offers a fast and secure alternative to the existing TEM Motorway and D-100 Highway, which are subjected to high traffic volumes.
The motorway, which connects Tekirdağ and Sakarya via the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and Istanbul Airport access roads, has significantly reduced the traffic congestion on existing transportation networks, especially the Istanbul Bosphorus crossings that were operating beyond their capacity.
The Northern Marmara Motorway, one of the main arteries of the Marmara Motorway Ring, integrates with the currently operational Istanbul-Izmir Motorway and the existing Trans European Motorway (TEM) at various points. In the future, when it is connected to the Kınalı-Tekirdağ-Çanakkale-Savaştepe Motorway, a high-standard motorway network will be established around the Marmara Region, where the country's economic activities are most concentrated.
